Magnus Boström is a Professor of Sociology at Örebro University, affiliated with the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and the Department of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. He leads the Center for Social Science Environmental and Sustainability Research (CESSS). His research focuses on environmental sociology, consumption sociology, and political sociology, with a particular emphasis on sustainability transformations, transformative learning, and the social drivers of excessive consumption. Boström has published over 100 scholarly works, including books like The Social Life of Unsustainable Mass Consumption (2023) and co-authored Environmental Sociology and Social Transformation (2024).
His current research explores social mechanisms behind mass consumption and strategies to encourage lifestyle changes through transformative learning. He leads initiatives like the Horizon 2020 project ACCTING, advancing behavioral change for sustainability. Boström teaches sociological theory, environmental sociology, and research methods across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. He actively engages in public discourse through popular science articles and media contributions, addressing topics like overconsumption reduction and sustainable lifestyles.
Boström’s projects include analyzing cross-cultural ethical consumption (Sweden/Iran) and leveraging pandemic experiences to promote sustainability. His research groups include the Environmental Sociology Section and Transformative Learning for Sustainable Development. He has collaborated on global environmental governance studies, chemical risk management in textiles, and participatory environmental policies in the Baltic Sea region.
