Dr. Louis Nolte is a Teaching Fellow in Sports Policy and Management at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, within the Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences (ISPEHS). He serves as Education Director of the Scottish Centre for Olympic Research and Education (SCORE) and Programme Director for the MSc Sport Policy, Management and International Development. His roles include editorial board membership with the International Judo Federation Academy and executive roles in judo organizations like the Commonwealth Judo Association.
Dr. Nolte holds a 5th dan black belt and extensive judo coaching experience, including national team leadership roles in South Africa. Academically, he earned a Doctorate in Sport Management from the University of Johannesburg, alongside multiple honours degrees in Psychology and Human Movement Sciences. His qualifications also include a PgCap in Higher Education from the University of Edinburgh.
Research interests span strategic sport management, elite sport systems, judo development in small states, and volunteer management. He has conducted studies on judo federations globally and the impact of judo in education systems. Recent work explores sport policy in the Global South and long-term athlete development frameworks.
Key projects include a review of Netball South Africa's elite system and analysis of Commonwealth Youth Games management. He presents frequently at international conferences, focusing on judo science and sport management topics.
