Dr. Len Parker Simpson is a Teaching Fellow in Sports Physiology at the University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport, affiliated with the Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences (ISPEHS). He holds a PhD in human bioenergetics from the University of Exeter, focusing on the critical power model. His expertise spans extreme-intensity exercise physiology, training optimization, and applied performance science. Simpson has extensive industry experience, including roles as a Performance Physiologist with the English Institute of Sport (supporting British Cycling during the London 2012 Paralympics and Rio 2016 Olympics) and Head of Performance Science at Japan Cycling’s High Performance Centre, contributing to Japan’s 2020 Olympic Silver in Women’s Omnium. Recently, he advises elite professional road cyclists, achieving notable successes in World Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Research interests include bioenergetic models, training periodization, exercise during pregnancy, and return-to-sport strategies. His applied work bridges human and technological science to enhance athlete performance. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in Exercise Physiology and Sport Physiology, as well as postgraduate supervision. He actively engages in academic discourse, including a 2023 keynote at the Cycling into Practice Symposium.
Publications focus on critical power modeling, neuromuscular function in elite cyclists, and cycling biomechanics. Despite no explicit awards listed, his contributions to Olympic success underscore his impact in applied sports science.
