Dr. Matthew Weston is a Lecturer in Strength & Conditioning at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, within the Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences (ISPEHS). With 25 years of combined experience in elite sport practice and academia, he has held roles such as Head of Sports Science for Professional Game Match Officials (England) and Senior Football Researcher at Qatar's Aspire Academy. His research focuses on training load monitoring, exercise physiology, and athlete performance optimization across soccer, netball, and clinical populations.
Education includes roles as a Reader in Exercise Science at Teesside University and participation in FIFA-sponsored research at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). He is a BASES-accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist since 2000 and earned a BASES Fellowship in 2018.
Research interests span sports science applications in officiating, youth talent development, high-intensity interval training (HIT), and workplace exercise interventions. Recent work emphasizes novel methodologies like intensity gradients for workload analysis and exercise snacks for diverse populations.
