Dr. Walker J Ross is a Lecturer in Sport Management and Digital Marketing at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, part of the Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences (ISPEHS). He serves as Director and Communications Lead for the Sport Ecology Group (SEG) and is affiliated with the Scottish Centre for Olympic Research and Education (SCORE) and the Academy of Sport. His research focuses on sport ecology, exploring the interplay between sport and environmental sustainability, particularly addressing climate change impacts on mega-events like the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cups.
Dr. Ross holds a PhD in Sport and Entertainment Management from the University of South Carolina, an MS in Kinesiology from the University of Georgia, and a BA in Environmental Ethics and Policy from the University of Portland. He completed a Seminar in Olympic Studies at the International Olympic Academy.
His research interests include the Triple Planetary Crisis, environmental justice in sport, and governance frameworks for sustainability. He has contributed to reports such as the UN Environment Programme’s Sports for Nature Handbook and Slippery Slopes, emphasizing actionable solutions for sport's environmental challenges.
Publications and presentations highlight his work on climate adaptation strategies in motorsport, venue management, and gender equity. He has been invited to speak at global forums, including UEFA Medical Symposia and the Common Goal Sustainability Summit. His academic awards include Fellowship from Advance HE.
Dr. Ross supervises PhD student Chang Su and welcomes inquiries on sport ecology research. He has collaborated on grants and initiatives addressing environmental threats to sport infrastructure and sustainable venue practices, integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies to drive industry change.
His affiliations with SEG, SCORE, and other networks underscore his commitment to bridging academic research with industry applications, advocating for sport’s role in environmental stewardship.
