Mike Callan

Professor Mike Callan serves as Professor of Judo Education at the University of Hertfordshire within the Department of Psychology, Sport and Geography (School of Life and Medical Sciences). He leads the i-dojo International Judo Research Unit and holds prominent international roles including President of the International Association of Judo Researchers and Scientific Committee Member of the International Judo Federation.

His educational background includes:

• BSc (Hons) in Ergonomics from Loughborough University
• PhD in Sport Education (Elite sport and education support systems) from the University of Bath
• Diploma in Management from the University of Reading

Callan's research spans judo safe falling, coach education, talent development, sporting performance, and head injuries. His work bridges academic rigor with practical applications, particularly in preventing injurious falls among older adults and optimizing coaching methodologies. With extensive international engagement across 20+ countries, his research directly impacts global judo practice and policy.

His 2024-2025 publications reveal a strategic focus on translating judo research into societal benefits: safer falling techniques for elderly populations, historical analysis of women's judo, concussion management protocols, and elite performance analytics. These works demonstrate interdisciplinary integration across sports science, public health, and historical studies.
