Dr. Lori Chambers is an Adjunct Professor in Gender and Women's Studies and Health Sciences at Lakehead University, where she has been since 1999. She also serves as Chair. Her work focuses on gender-based violence, legal history, and feminist legal theory. Chambers holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (1993), an MA from McMaster University (1989), and a BA Honours from McMaster University (1988).
Research Interests: Chambers’ current projects include harm reduction strategies in domestic violence shelters, legal responses to women fighting domestic abuse (e.g., R. v. Ryan), and feminist critiques of patriarchal legal systems. She co-edited Essays in the History of Canadian Law (2024), which challenged gender norms in legal history. Her book No Legal Way Out (2021) analyzes the defense of duress in domestic violence cases.
Awards: Royal Society of Canada Fellow (2021); Community Engaged Research Award (Lakehead University); Alison Prentice Award (twice for best Canadian women’s history books); Barreau Du Quebec Honourable Mention for legal writing.
Grants & Collaborations: SSHRC-funded projects on sexual violence reporting (with Jodie Murphy-Oikonen, Karen McQueen, Ainsley Miller) and filicide cases (Cotton v. Berry). Co-edits volumes on Indigenous health, women’s legal history, and child welfare. Active in policy advocacy for marginalized groups.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams focusing on legal reform, public health, and Indigenous rights. Partners include Drs. Nadia Verrelli, Amanda Hovey, and Joan Sangster.
