Dr Leighton James is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Swansea University’s School of Culture and Communication. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of late 18th- and 19th-century Europe, particularly the Seven Years’ War and the Revolutionary/Napoleonic Wars. He co-founded the Society for the History of War (SHOW) and the Conflict, Reconstruction, and Memory (CRAM) research group.

His publications analyze military culture, colonial legacies, and the intersection of war with societal memory. Dr James teaches modules on historical methods, dissertation research, and global historical themes, including the Early Modern World, Europe of Extremes (1789–1989), and the evolution of warfare from swords to AI. His work bridges academic rigor with public engagement, emphasizing digitization’s role in accessing primary sources and the contested nature of heritage narratives.
