Dr Joseph Clarke is the Head of Department and Associate Professor in European History at Trinity College Dublin's Department of History. His research focuses on cultural change and political conflict in eighteenth-century Western Europe, particularly in France and the Mediterranean. He has authored books such as Commemorating the Dead in Revolutionary France (2007/2011) and co-edited volumes like Militarized Cultural Encounters in the Long Nineteenth Century (2018). He served as co-editor of French History (Oxford University Press) from 2018 to 2024. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate modules on European political and cultural history, including the French Revolution and Napoleonic era.
Research interests include the interplay between memory, death, and violence in Revolutionary France, as well as militarized cultural encounters. He supervises postgraduate research in these areas and contributes to Trinity's M.Phil in Early Modern History. His recent publications analyze civil war dynamics, Enlightenment-era mortality concepts, and Mediterranean colonial conflicts.
