Dr. Ultán Gillen is a Senior Lecturer in European History at Teesside University, where he serves as Principal Lecturer for Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a BA from Queen's University Belfast and a doctorate from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the French Revolution's international impact, Irish political culture, and revolutionary movements in the Atlantic world.
Gillen's expertise encompasses the Enlightenment, political thought, and counter-revolutionary movements. His current project examines Theobald Wolfe Tone as a revolutionary democrat, while maintaining research on comparative counter-revolution in France, Britain, and Ireland during the Napoleonic era.
As Director of Studies, he supervises PhD candidates researching Classical influences on American constitutionalism and women's roles in 18th-century property transfers. His scholarly contributions include publications on republicanism, political culture, and historical interpretations of revolutionary figures.
