Mary Ashburn Miller is Professor of History and Humanities at Reed College, specializing in eighteenth and nineteenth-century French history. Her research examines the cultural and intellectual history of revolutions, with particular focus on the French Revolution and its aftermath. Miller's work explores how societies process violence and upheaval through cultural frameworks.
Her book 'A Natural History of Revolution' analyzes the relationship between violence and natural imagery during revolutionary periods. Current research investigates the return of emigrants and refugees to post-revolutionary France, examining questions of memory, reconciliation, and national identity.
At Reed, Miller teaches courses on European-North African relations, war and peace in modern Europe, and the history of science. She also contributes to Reed's interdisciplinary Humanities program. Her teaching connects historical events to broader themes of violence, cultural encounter, and scientific development.
