Dr. Laverne Jacobs is a full Professor of Law at the University of Windsor, Canada. Her expertise lies in disability rights law, human rights law, equality law, and administrative justice. She holds degrees from McGill University (BA(Hons), LL.B., BCL) and a PhD from Osgoode Hall Law School. Jacobs is the Founding Director of The Law, Disability and Social Change Project and Co-Director of the Disability Rights Working Group at Berkeley Law. She has contributed significantly to Canadian disability law through publications like Law and Disability in Canada (2021) and the Annotated Accessible Canada Act. Jacobs has held public roles on Ontario’s Accessibility Standards Advisory Council, testified before the Canadian Senate, and is Canada’s nominee for the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2023-2026).
Her research emphasizes disability equality through accessible legal frameworks and marginalized communities’ experiences. Key themes include transportation equity, administrative justice reform, and gender-disparities in disability benefits. Jacobs’ work bridges theory and practice, advocating for participatory policy development and inclusive legal systems.
