Laverne Jacobs is a Professor and former Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. Her academic work focuses on disability rights, administrative law, and access to justice. She has been actively involved in shaping federal and provincial accessibility policies, including leading the creation of the Annotated Accessible Canada Act. Dr. Jacobs was elected to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2022, reflecting her global influence in disability advocacy.
Her research spans disability discrimination law, transportation equity, and administrative justice reforms. She co-founded the Law, Disability & Social Change Project, which addresses systemic barriers faced by persons with disabilities. Jacobs has received multiple awards, including the Canadian Bar Association's Equality Promotion Award (2021) and the Windsor-Essex Accessibility Awards (2019). She has collaborated with students and community organizations to advance inclusive policies, such as examining the Social Security Tribunal’s Navigator Service and advocating for marginalized communities' access to justice.
Jacobs has published extensively, with recent works analyzing disability equality in EU law, micromobility policies, and inclusive post-secondary education. Her leadership includes roles in the Windsor Law Centre for Cities and contributions to international legal dialogues through webinars and global courses. Her work bridges legal theory and practical policy, emphasizing participatory approaches to achieve disability equality and equitable administrative systems.
