The Honourable Mahmud Jamal is a Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada since July 1, 2021, and an adjunct professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Law. He previously served as a Justice of Ontario’s Court of Appeal (2019–2021). Jamal holds LL.B. and B.C.L. degrees from McGill University and an LL.M. from Yale Law School, where he studied on a Fulbright Scholarship. His legal career spanned over 23 years at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, specializing in appellate litigation, constitutional law, and commercial disputes. He has taught constitutional law at McGill and administrative law at Osgoode Hall, and authored numerous publications in legal practice areas.

Research interests focus on constitutional law, public law, and Quebec civil law, reflecting his extensive litigation and academic contributions. He has served on boards of organizations like the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and chairs the Ontario Rhodes Scholarship Committee. Jamal’s pro bono work includes leading his firm’s national pro bono program and advocating for legal access through roles like trustee of the Canadian Business Law Journal.
