Gerard Kennedy is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Manitoba since January 2020. His academic and professional career spans roles as a lawyer, lecturer, and jurist with a focus on reforming Canadian civil procedure to enhance access to justice and improve inter-community relations. He has taught civil procedure, administrative law, and international law while contributing to leading Canadian legal journals.
- Education: Doctorate from Osgoode Hall Law School (2016 Trudeau Scholar, SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholar); LLM from Harvard Law School (Frank Knox Memorial Fellow, 2012); JD from Queen’s University (Dean’s Key recipient); BA in Canadian Studies from the University of Toronto (high distinction).
Research Interests center on procedural justice reform, emphasizing equitable access to legal systems and stakeholder engagement. His work bridges practical litigation experience with academic inquiry, particularly in constitutional, administrative, and international law contexts.
Professional Experience includes a litigation practice at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP (2012–2020), focusing on employment, constitutional litigation, and construction disputes. He clerked at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (2011) and interned at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (2009).
Teaching & Pro Bono Contributions: He served as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto and taught administrative/international law at Queen’s University. His pro bono work involved constitutional litigation interventions, challenging Jamaica’s anti-sodomy laws, and duty counsel in Ontario courts.
Awards: Recognized with the 2016 Young Advocates' Society Pro Bono Award for community service and the Dean’s Key at Queen’s University for excellence in academics and community involvement.
