Laurie P. Dishman serves as Professor of Mathematics and Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Cumberland University within The Labry School of Science, Technology, and Business. She has held academic and leadership roles at the institution since 1998, including Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (2008-2013) and Director of the Learning Center (1999-2004).
Her educational credentials include:
- B.S. in Mathematics and French from Carson-Newman College (1993)
- M.A. in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University (1995)
- Ph.D. in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University (1998)
Dr. Dishman specializes in Mathematics with emphasis on Algebra and Calculus pedagogy, particularly teaching the calculus sequence and Abstract Algebra. She actively mentors undergraduates through Mathematical Association of America-Southeastern Section (MAA-SE) conferences where students present research, reflecting her commitment to experiential learning in pure mathematics education.
Her institutional leadership spans accreditation and assessment, serving on SACSCOC writing teams for Fifth Year and Decennial Reviews, completing peer evaluator training, and chairing university committees including Faculty Senate and curriculum development. As former Tennessee State Director for MAA-SE (2014-2017), she advanced regional undergraduate mathematics engagement.
