Dr. William Tune is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Cumberland University, located in Labry Hall, Room 235. He joined the institution in Fall 2017 and teaches within the Labry School of Science, Technology, and Business. Previously, he taught at Motlow State Community College and Indiana University, where he received the Rothrock Teaching Award (2013). His research focuses on mathematical logic applied to natural language, λ-calculus, and coalgebras.
Education: B.S. in Mathematics (Chancellor’s and Mathematics Honors programs) from University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2010 Outstanding Graduate), and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Indiana University. He participated in two summer undergraduate research experiences.
Research emphasizes creating calculi for monotonic patterns in natural language, supported by the Robert K. Meyer Graduate Fellowship (awarded twice). His work bridges formal logic with linguistic structures, leveraging algebraic and computational methods.
Publications include seminal papers on morphic sequences and monotonicity calculus. Awards reflect both academic excellence and teaching excellence. No grants or lab affiliations explicitly noted in text.
