Kenneth H. Carter serves as Bishop-in-Residence and Consultant Lecturer at Duke University’s Divinity School. He is a fellow in the Center for Studies in the Wesleyan Tradition and concurrently acts as resident bishop of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Previously, he held leadership roles including President of the Council of Bishops and Moderator of the Commission on a Way Forward. His expertise spans Christian leadership, Methodist studies, and ecumenical dialogue.
He co-chairs the United Methodist–Roman Catholic Dialogue and participates in the United Methodist–British Methodist Concordat. His research emphasizes the mission of the church and United Methodist theology, reflected in his 2023 book Unrelenting Grace.
Carter’s professional contributions include teaching doctoral and master’s courses on church governance and Methodist traditions. He actively engages in denominational governance, recently guiding Duke Divinity students through preparatory coursework for the United Methodist Church General Conference.
