William H. Willimon is a Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School and director of its Doctor of Ministry program. A retired bishop in the United Methodist Church, he previously served as Dean of Duke Chapel for 20 years and led the North Alabama Conference (2004–2012). He holds degrees from Wofford College (B.A.), Yale Divinity School (M.Div.), and Emory University (S.T.D.).
His scholarly work emphasizes pastoral care, church leadership, and Methodist theology. He has authored over 70 books, including influential titles like Worship as Pastoral Care, and regularly contributes to The Christian Century as editor-at-large. His recent publications address denominational decline, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and institutional renewal in Methodism.
Willimon serves on the Dean’s Committee at Yale Divinity School and as a trustee at Wofford College and Emory University. His honorary degrees include recognition from Westminster College, Lehigh University, and Mennonite Theological Seminary. His teaching focuses on leadership, preaching, and contextual ministry, with courses like Preaching: Understanding and Interpreting Context offered through Duke's Scholars@Duke portal.
