Kelly Rossum is a Professor of Music in the Department of Performing Arts - Music at Christopher Newport University (CNU), holding the Jean E. Falk Professorship. He specializes in trumpet performance, jazz studies, composition, and improvisation. Rossum is an internationally recognized artist with performances spanning diverse genres and locations, including lead trumpet at New York’s Birdland, baroque trumpet in Germany, and improvised free jazz in Thailand.
Education:
- Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Trumpet Performance, University of Minnesota
- Master of Music (MM) in Trumpet Performance, University of North Texas
- Bachelor of Music (BM) in Trumpet Performance, University of Nebraska
Research & Creativity: Focuses on composition incorporating improvisational and avant-garde techniques. His works have been commissioned by major organizations and performed globally. He composes film and dance scores and collaborates with ensembles like the Fifth Bridge electro-acoustic trumpet quintet.
