Dr. John Andrew McGuire serves as Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera within the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance at Christopher Newport University (CNU), a position he has held since joining the faculty in August 2016. His responsibilities encompass teaching, directing opera productions, and performing.
His academic credentials are as follows:
- Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Vocal Performance, University of Texas at Austin
- Master of Music (MM) in Vocal Performance, Northwestern University
- Bachelor of Music (BM) in Vocal Performance, University of New Hampshire
Dr. McGuire's scholarly pursuits center on vocal pedagogy, opera performance practice, contemporary vocal music spanning art song to opera, and vocal health. His research integrates practical performance experience with academic study to advance understanding in vocal arts.
As an opera director, he has led productions such as The Old Maid and the Thief (CNU, Fall 2016), The Marriage of Figaro (Franco American Vocal Academy, Salzburg, Summer 2015), and numerous others including Les Contes D'Hoffmann and Cosi fan tutte. His performance career features leading roles in operas by Mozart, Bizet, and Puccini, among others.
Dr. McGuire is an integral part of CNU's music program, contributing to its growth and reputation through his teaching, direction, and performance.
