Dr. Kaveh Abbasian is a Lecturer in Film and Media Practice at the University of Kent, serving as Film Course Director. His academic career includes a PhD in Film and Television Studies from the University of Roehampton (2019) and an MA in Documentary Practices (2016). He holds prestigious awards such as the Techne AHRC PhD Scholarship and a fellowship at the Library of Congress's John W. Kluge Center. Abbasian’s research focuses on the intersection of cinema with Iranian national identity, Islamic mysticism, and Kurdish diasporic filmmaking. His practice-based work includes feature documentaries like Triumph (2021), exploring post-revolutionary Iran, and experimental film projects emphasizing marginalized voices.
His teaching spans film history, theory, and production at institutions like Birkbeck and Roehampton, covering modules such as Alternative Film Cultures and Production Practices. Research interests extend to guerrilla filmmaking, refugee agency through media, and decolonial cinema practices. Key outputs include a 2023 article on Islamic mysticism’s influence on Iranian film theory and a 2023 book chapter on refugee filmmaking agency. Abbasian’s work has been featured at major festivals like the Venice Biennale and London East End Film Festival. He previously directed programming for the London Kurdish Film Festival and served on the Global Kurdish Film Festival jury.
Current projects involve studies on Kurdish cinema’s collective consciousness and the evolving landscape of Iranian cinema under Revolutionary Guard influence. His forthcoming publications address diasporic filmmaking and the role of cinema in reclaiming cultural agency for marginalized communities.
