Zahra Fathi Khosroshahi is a Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow's Theatre, Film & Television Studies school. Her research focuses on Iranian cinema's portrayal of women and gender politics, examining how visual media challenges power structures and functions as resistance. She also explores Iranian cinema's global influence, diasporic and Middle Eastern cinematic traditions, and representation of Muslims in media.
Her work extends beyond academia through contributions to platforms like Muslim Girl and The Conversation, promoting public discourse on film representation. She collaborates internationally to diversify film programming, having worked in Iran, Turkey, Japan, and the UK with artists and institutions to foster inclusive cinema.
Zahra co-edited The I.B. Tauris Handbook of Iranian Cinema (2024) and authored notable articles on Iranian women filmmakers' narratives, including analyses of Rakhshan Banietemad's films. Her recent research addresses transnational feminist approaches in Middle Eastern and North African media, published in Transnational Screens.
She supervises PhD students in Iranian cinema, Middle Eastern cinema, and women’s filmmaking. External roles include serving on the International Editorial Board of Iranian Cinema and co-founding Thousand&One, a social enterprise supporting Women of Colour in professional development.
