Mehrnoosh Fetrat is an Assistant Professor of Instruction at Northwestern University’s School of Communication (SoC), Department of Radio/Television/Film. She previously taught at Drexel University, The College of New Jersey, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Temple University, and Saint Joseph's University. Her research focuses on German New Wave cinema (particularly Rainer Werner Fassbinder), Third Cinema, and Iranian cinema. She has written and translated articles on these topics and adapted English plays into Farsi, including Red by John Logan and Superior Donuts by Tracy Letts.
Her filmmaking work includes three short films—War Game, America, and Copsi—screened globally at over 50 festivals, including Sundance Collab, Tehran International Film Festival, and Kurdish Film Festival in Berlin. Her films are distributed by the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre and streamed on platforms like Comcast Streampix. Awards include Best Actor (Artemis), Best Film/Cinematography (Diamond Screen), and nominations for Princess Grace and PEW Fellowships.
She founded the Utopia Film Club in Philadelphia, promoting avant-garde cinema, and at Northwestern hosts screenings and panels. She advises Chapin Residential College and supports RTVF student groups. Current projects include the short Raw, Cooked, Burned (exploring Iranian women post-1979 Revolution) and the documentary Unfinished: Kamran Shirdel (examining post-revolution Iran).
