Dr. Christopher Brown is an Associate Professor in Filmmaking at the School of Media, Arts and Humanities, University of Sussex. His academic career includes prior roles as Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in Film Production at the University of Greenwich. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, focusing on masculinity in American cinema, alongside an MPhil in Screen Media & Cultures and a PGCHE in Higher Education.
His research explores intersections between cultural contexts and cinematic form/content, with a focus on Taiwanese cinema, LGBTQ+ representation, and screen performance. Key works include the 2024 monograph Mapping Taiwanese Cinema, 2008-20 and co-edited collection The Cinema of the Swimming Pool. He actively advises the Queer East film festival, promoting East/Southeast Asian LGBTQ+ cinema in the UK.
As a filmmaker, Brown has directed award-nominated shorts like Remission (LGBTQ+ Iris Prize) and Soap (New Jersey Festival honourable mention). His practice-based research bridges experimental film techniques with academic analysis, often engaging with site-specific environments like wartime tunnels in Kent.
Award recognitions include screenplay nominations at Leeds and London Film Festivals, alongside academic service roles such as membership in the Asian Cinema Studies Society and ethics committee membership at Sussex.
