William Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Film at the University of Roehampton, affiliated with the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the Centre for Research in Arts and Creative Exchange. He holds a DPhil in Film Theory and Digital Cinema from the University of Oxford, alongside a BA and MSt from the same institution. His teaching spans BA and MA modules including Forms of Cinema, World Cinemas, and Guerrilla Filmmaking, while he also serves as Exams Officer for Film Studies.
Research interests focus on film-philosophy, digital cinema, cognitive film theory, and transnational cinema. As a filmmaker, he directed acclaimed features like EN ATTENDANT GODARD (2009) and AFTERIMAGES (2010), with recent projects including THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT. He is actively involved in academic editing and peer review, serving as Book Reviews Editor for Film-Philosophy and Studies in European Cinema, and reviewing for over 20 journals and publishers.
His research outputs (107 articles, reviews, and creative works) explore intersections between film theory, philosophy, and digital media. Notable publications include analyses of Sofia Coppola’s work and transnational cinema dynamics. Peer-reviewed contributions span journals like Screen and Senses of Cinema, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
