J.P. Sniadecki is a Professor in the Radio/Television/Film Department at Northwestern University’s School of Communication. As both a filmmaker and anthropologist, he bridges creative and scholarly practices to explore themes of transfiguration, status quo transgression, and marginalized spaces across the U.S. and China. His work spans experimental and documentary filmmaking, with a focus on sites like Chengdu demolition zones, New York City junkyards, and the Sonoran Desert borderlands.

His research investigates the intersection of media and anthropology, emphasizing film’s capacity to engage with societal fringes. His films, such as El Mar La Mar and The Iron Ministry, have been acquired by institutions like MoMA and the Guggenheim, and exhibited globally at biennales and festivals including Berlin, Locarno, and IDFA. Themes include migration, environmental decay, and the poetics of everyday life.

J.P. directs Northwestern’s MFA in Documentary Media program and the Buffett Institute’s Climate Crisis + Media Arts Working Group. He co-founded the global screening series “Cinema on the Edge,” showcasing independent Chinese cinema, and serves on the editorial board of the Chinese Independent Cinema Observer journal.
