Professor Kate Evans is a faculty member in the Department of Horticulture at Washington State University (WSU), part of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. She is based at the WSU Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center (TFREC) in Wenatchee, WA. Her research focuses on pome fruit breeding and genomics, specifically apples and pears, including scions and rootstocks. She also develops molecular maps and markers for pre-selection in breeding progenies.
Education:
- Ph.D., Durham University: The effects of foreign genes in transgenic Thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana)
- B.Sc. (Hons) Genetics/Plant Biology, Leeds University
Professional Experience:
- Senior Research Leader at East Malling Research, UK (1992–2008)
- Interim Director, WSU TFREC (2019/2020)
- Chair of the Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee (2017/18)
- Co-host of the 2015 National Association of Plant Breeders Meeting (Pullman, WA)
Her work bridges traditional plant breeding with genomic technologies to improve fruit quality, disease resistance, and productivity in pome fruits. She collaborates extensively with agricultural stakeholders to translate research into practical solutions for orchard management.
