Huiting Zhang is an Assistant Research Professor at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and the Department of Plant Sciences. She holds a joint appointment with the Ficklin Lab at WSU and the Honaas Lab at the USDA ARS. Her research focuses on post-harvest fruit quality, comparative genomics, and functional genomic analysis of pome fruit genes. She transitioned from a postdoctoral role to her current position in 2025.
Her work spans biomarker development for fruit risk assessment, genomic tools for quality control, and transcriptomic studies on stress responses in apples and pears. Recent projects include creating chromosome-scale genomes for apple and pear varieties, analyzing gene families in non-model plants, and applying machine learning to quantify fruit defects like superficial scald and sunburn.
- Labs: Ficklin Lab (WSU), Honaas Lab (USDA ARS)
- Labs/Teams: Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in genomics, bioinformatics, and agricultural engineering.
Publications highlight advancements in genomic assembly standards, comparative gene family analysis, and the application of computational tools to solve agricultural challenges. Her work bridges fundamental plant biology with practical applications in fruit cultivation and storage.
