Karen Middleton is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the Faculty of Business & Law and the School of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation. She leads the Faculty Athena SWAN Team, an initiative promoting gender equality in higher education. Her research focuses on gender and inclusion in advertising, with a particular emphasis on societal impacts and systemic equity. Karen holds a PhD from the University of Portsmouth (2022), recognized by the Worshipful Company of Marketors Thesis Award.
Education: PhD (University of Portsmouth, 2022) in gender stereotyping in advertising.
Research interests include socially responsible advertising practices, the role of advertising in shaping market systems, and the intersection of corporate communications with social media. Her work has been published in Psychology & Marketing, Marketing Theory, and the International Journal of Advertising.
Her articles analyze consumer activism, service ecosystem resilience, and gender dynamics in advertising. Recent projects include the UKRI KTP project on advertised emissions frameworks and a study on violence against women and girls (VAWG). She collaborates with organizations like the Conscious Advertising Network to advocate against harmful content.
Awards include the 2023 Worshipful Company of Marketors Thesis Award and the 2022 Best Dissemination Prize. Karen also engages in policy discussions on gender equity and consumer rights.
She supervises PhD students and has advised on live-client learning initiatives (EmployaGility). Her research contributes to UN SDGs related to education and gender equality.
