Dr. Joseph Rubin is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan's Western College of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, particularly in bacteria such as MRSA, ESBL-producing organisms, and Brachyspira species. He holds a DVM and PhD from the University of Saskatchewan.
- Education: DVM (University of Saskatchewan), PhD in Veterinary Microbiology (University of Saskatchewan)
Key research interests include molecular epidemiology, zoonotic disease transmission, and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and wildlife. His work spans both veterinary and human medicine, addressing the global threat of 'superbugs.'
He collaborates with organizations like Swine Innovation Porc, Zoetis, and NSERC, and oversees the Rubin Lab, which investigates antimicrobial resistance in imported foods, Brachyspira-associated diseases, and canine urinary tract infections. Current projects include developing diagnostic methods for Brachyspira and analyzing resistance genes in non-pathogenic organisms.
- Funding: Supported by Swine Innovation Porc, Elanco, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Zoetis, and NSERC.
Students advised include Ruwini Gamage, Rachel Courtice, and Beverly Morrison. The Rubin Lab is located in Saskatoon, Canada, with a focus on interdisciplinary research across species and ecosystems.
