Hooman Derakhshani is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. His research focuses on host-associated microbiomes in agricultural and clinical contexts, with particular emphasis on antimicrobial resistance dynamics, immune homeostasis modulation, and microbiome therapeutic development for livestock.
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow
- PhD in Animal Science (University of Manitoba)
- MSc in Animal Science (University of Queensland)
- DVM (University of Tehran)
Research interests span from high-throughput microbiome culturing to genome-guided therapeutic discovery, with significant attention to mobile genetic elements' role in antimicrobial resistance spread and their implications for both animal production and human health.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in agricultural microbiome engineering, covering dietary interventions, rumen fermentation dynamics, and novel approaches to managing antimicrobial resistance through anaerobic digestion technologies. His work bridges veterinary medicine, computational microbiology, and translational biotechnology applications.
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship
Active in microbiome research across multiple systems including bovine mammary glands, swine gut environments, and rumen communities, with emerging contributions to pandemic surveillance through SARS-CoV-2 variant analysis during his postdoctoral training.
