Dr. Matheus Costa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. He holds a DVM from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil (2011) and a PhD from the University of Saskatchewan (2016). His research focuses on pathogen virulence mechanisms, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and swine health. He investigates approaches to mitigate disease and reduce antibiotic use in livestock, addressing global challenges in sustainable food production and public health.
Dr. Costa’s research employs advanced techniques such as metabolomics, metagenomics, and organ culture models to study host-pathogen-microbiota interactions, particularly in swine. His lab, the Costa Lab, prioritizes translational solutions for veterinary and human health, including alternative therapies to antibiotics. He teaches swine medicine and collaborates on projects spanning species (e.g., human-animal AMR linkages) and disciplines (e.g., epigenetics and microbiome dynamics).
Key areas of investigation include swine dysentery, streptococcal meningitis, and the ocular microbiome in animals. His work bridges clinical practice and academia, with a focus on practical applications in farm settings. The Costa Lab also emphasizes public outreach to promote best practices in swine production and disease management.
