Joséf Joffe is a Senior Fellow at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, part of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He holds the title of Professor of Practice/International Affairs and has a long-standing affiliation with Johns Hopkins, where he earned his M.A. and previously taught nuclear strategy in the 1980s. His academic background includes degrees from Swarthmore College (B.A.), the College of Europe, and Harvard University (Ph.D. in Government).
His career bridges academia and journalism, with teaching roles at SAIS, Harvard, Stanford, Munich University, and visiting positions at Princeton, Dartmouth, and others. He has held research posts at the Woodrow Wilson Center, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Stanford’s Institute for International Studies. Since 2004, he has been a Distinguished Fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution.
Joffe’s research interests span international affairs, security studies, and political analysis. He co-founded American Purpose magazine (2020) and previously co-founded The American Interest. His journalism spans outlets like The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Financial Times, alongside contributions to academic journals such as Foreign Affairs and International Security.
He has served as editorial-page editor at Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung and editor of Die Zeit. His awards include twice being named a Regent Fellow at the University of California. Beyond academia, he has delivered guest lectures globally, from Amherst to Zurich University.
