Jose Castillo is Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP), a position he began in July 2024. He is also the founding principal of a|911, an architecture and urban planning practice based in Mexico City. His work spans research, design, and pedagogy across architecture, urbanism, housing, infrastructure, and food systems.

Castillo's research focuses on the intersections of architecture, urbanism, and social equity. He emphasizes connecting design with social and political realities, advocating for awareness of architecture’s environmental and societal impacts.
His recent publications and projects reflect a deep engagement with urban transformation, informal settlements, cultural spaces, and sustainable construction. Themes across his work include self-built urbanism, public institutions, urban planning, and the social performance of cities.

His firm, a|911, has completed award-winning projects such as the PILARES community centers, Spanish Cultural Center, and Cetram San Lázaro transportation hub.
He has been involved in significant urban master plans and is currently shaping the future of architectural education at Cornell AAP, emphasizing engaged practice, environmental action, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
