Hashim Sarkis serves as Dean of MIT's School of Architecture and Planning since 2015. Previously, he held the Aga Khan Professorship at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD), alongside roles at MIT and global visiting appointments. He is a licensed architect and founder of HashimSarkis Studios, specializing in affordable housing, institutional buildings, and urban planning projects worldwide, including Byblos Town Hall and the Courtowers. His work has been showcased at the Venice Architecture Biennale and recognized with awards such as the First Prize for Byblos Town Hall (2011) and inclusion in the Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century Architecture (2008).
Education: BArch & BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (1980s), MArch from Harvard GSD (1987), PhD from Harvard GSD (1998) focusing on public engagement in architecture. His research bridges urban design, cultural heritage, and Middle Eastern urbanism. He co-authored Josep Lluis Sert: The Architect of Urban Design and edited volumes on Le Corbusier and modern architecture history. Sarkis co-founded Plan B and the Arab Center for Architecture, and contributed to Beirut's post-war urban redevelopment through projects like Open City and Downtown Redevelopment.
His academic work emphasizes participatory design, resilience, and the role of architecture in socio-political contexts. Awards include Harvard teaching accolades and the Venice Biennale's US Pavilion inclusion (2014). Current projects and publications explore global urban challenges, territorial aesthetics, and co-habitation models in diverse cities like Addis Ababa and Hong Kong.
