Shunsaku Miyagi is a Visiting Professor in Landscape Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD). He is a founding partner of PLACEMEDIA, an award-winning landscape and urban design firm with offices in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. Over 35 years, his work has spanned projects from small-scale housing to large urban redevelopment, emphasizing harmony between historic/cultural environments and natural landscapes. His collaborations with renowned architects like Yoshio Taniguchi and Kengo Kuma have elevated the recognition of landscape architecture in Japan.
Miyagi holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard GSD and a PhD in Urban Design Studies from Kyoto University. His academic roles include Associate Professor at Chiba University and Professor in Urban Design at the University of Tokyo. At GSD, he will lead an option studio starting Fall 2024, focusing on climate adaptation design in Japan, integrating local natural and cultural contexts.
