Bas Smets is a Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD). He leads design studios exploring biospheric urbanism and climate-resilient landscapes. His academic roles complement his career as a landscape architect, civil engineer, and founder of Bureau Bas Smets, a Brussels-based firm with projects across 12 countries.
Education: Master's in Architecture and Civil Engineering (KU Leuven) and Master's in Landscape (University of Geneva). Taught at institutions like École d'Architecture La Cambre (Brussels), École Spéciale d'Architecture (Paris), and TU Graz.
Research Focus: 'Augmented Landscapes' using natural logics to create microclimates and hybrid urban ecologies. Collaborates with artists and scientists, emphasizing climate adaptation and atmospheric innovation.
Key Projects: Parc des Ateliers (Arles), Notre-Dame Cathedral public space (Paris), Mandrake Hotel (London), Himara Waterfront (Albania). Currently developing urban forests in Lyon and Amagansett.
Awards: Aga Khan Award, French Academy of Architecture Prize, Brussels Architecture Prize, and AHEAD Global Awards. Recognized for pioneering climate-responsive urban design.
