Jorge Sastre Serra

Jorge Sastre Serra is a Full Professor in the Department of Fundamental Biology and Health Sciences at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), holding this position since April 2022. He previously served as Interim Associate Professor (2019–2022), Assistant Professor (2018), and Associate Professor (2015–2018). His academic background includes a dual degree in Biology and Biochemistry (2007, UIB) and a PhD (2012, UIB) on 'Importance of estrogen receptors in oxidative stress and cancer.'

Research Focus: Dr. Sastre leads the research line 'Mitochondrial metabolism and oxidative stress. Implications for cancer' within the Multidisciplinary Translational Oncology Group (GMOT) at IUNICS and IdISBa. His work bridges molecular mechanisms of cancer with translational oncology, emphasizing mitochondrial biology and stress responses. He has contributed to 42 peer-reviewed articles and over 90 conference presentations.

Teaching & Mentorship: He teaches courses such as Methods and Techniques in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry Final Project, and master’s-level biomedical research modules. He supervises doctoral students in the Public Health and High-Prevalence Diseases program. Recent teaching history includes roles in biochemistry, biology, and chemistry undergraduate programs.

Grants & Leadership: Principal investigator in 6 national research projects and co-PI in 4 fundraising initiatives (FUEIB/IdISBa). Active in 29 total research projects. Recognized with salary supplements for teaching excellence, research activity, and knowledge transfer.
