Jorge Sastre Serra

Jorge Sastre Serra is a Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within the Department of Fundamental Biology and Health Sciences at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). He has been serving in this role since April 2022, following prior appointments as Interim Contracted Doctor Professor (2019–2022), Assistant Professor Doctor (2018–2019), and Associate Professor (2015–2018). He is also the Secretary of the department and a member of the Multidisciplinary Group of Translational Oncology (GMOT) at IUNICS and IdISBa.

His research focuses on mitochondrial metabolism and oxidative stress in cancer, particularly examining the role of estrogen receptors in mitochondrial dynamics, biogenesis, and their implications in oncogenesis. His work spans molecular mechanisms of redox balance, metabolic reprogramming in tumors, and translational applications for cancer therapy.

The most recent publications reflect a strong focus on mitochondrial biology in cancer, with recurring themes including mitochondrial fission/fusion, estrogen receptor signaling, oxidative stress pathways, and their integration into translational oncology. Jorge Sastre Serra has participated in 29 national and local research projects, serving as Principal Investigator in 6 of them. He also acts as co-Investigator in 4 fundraising projects coordinated by FUEIB or IdISBa, highlighting his active engagement in securing research funding and collaborative science. He teaches in both undergraduate (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology) and postgraduate (Biomedical Research Master’s) programs and supervises Master's and Bachelor's theses, as well as doctoral students in Translational Research and Food Sciences programs.

His primary research is conducted within the Multidisciplinary Group of Translational Oncology (GMOT), a consolidated R&D group affiliated with IUNICS and IdISBa, which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians to advance cancer research from bench to bedside.
