Dr. Johnny Walker is an Associate Professor of Media and Film at Northumbria University, serving as Head of Visual Communication and Digital Cultures within the School of Arts, Design and Social Sciences. He is Vice Chair of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS). With a focus on horror genre studies, media distribution, and British cinema history, his research explores intersections between cultural production, technology, and society.
Education: PhD in Film Studies from De Montfort University (2013), specializing in contemporary British horror cinema. Prior roles include lectureships at De Montfort University and the University of Sunderland.
Research interests emphasize the horror genre’s evolution across film/video/digital media, regulatory frameworks, and the socio-cultural impact of 1970s-1980s popular fiction. Notable works include Rewind, Replay (2022) and Contemporary British Horror Cinema (2015), alongside edited volumes on exploitation cinema and transnational horror.
Editorial roles include co-editing Bloomsbury’s Global Exploitation Cinemas series and serving on Horror Studies (UWP) and MONSTRUM journal boards. Active in international academia through conference keynotes, peer-reviewing, and PhD examining. Currently supervising PhD students in horror genre history, distribution studies, and media regulation.
