Dr. Mikel Koven is a Senior Lecturer in Media & Film Studies at the University of Worcester's Institute of Arts and Humanities, Department of English Media and Culture. He specializes in teaching World cinema, genre studies, Hollywood cinema, horror cinema, film & folklore, and cult/exploitation cinema. His research focuses on intersections between film and folklore (fairy tales, myths, legends), Italian horror film, Jewish cinema (including Holocaust representations), and “Cult” TV.
He holds a PhD in Folklore Studies from Memorial University of Newfoundland (1999), an MA in Film & Television Studies from the University of Warwick (1994), and a BA (Honors) in Humanities from York University (Toronto, 1992).
His publications include authored monographs like Blaxploitation Films (2010), Film, Folklore, & Urban Legends (2008), and edited volumes such as Folklore/Cinema: Popular Film and Vernacular Culture (2007). He has also co-edited special journal issues on topics like Jewish identity in popular culture (Shofar, 2007) and film & folklore (Western Folklore, 2005). His editorial work includes serving as editor of Contemporary Legend (2006–2012).
His research bridges folklore studies and cinema, exploring how myth, legend, and cultural traditions manifest in film genres like horror and exploitation cinema. His work on Italian giallo films and Jewish representation in media highlights his interdisciplinary approach to cultural studies.
