Dr. Louis Bayman is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, specializing in Film and Television studies. His research focuses on film aesthetics, popular genres, Italian cinema, horror, and melodrama, with a particular emphasis on temporal analysis in contemporary cinema. He holds a PhD from King's College London and has taught at universities in the UK and Rome since 2015.
Education: B.A. (Glasgow), M.A. (Warwick), PhD (King's College London). Research interests include the intersection of aesthetics and politics in film, particularly how cinematic treatment of time reflects contemporary societal anxieties. He has published extensively on Italian cinema and co-edited volumes like Folk Horror on Film.
His recent articles (2021–2025) explore temporality in Spencer, post-historical narratives, and Italian film traditions. Awards include an Honourable Mention for Journeys On Screen in the 2020 BAFTSS Best Edited Collection category.
Teaching includes modules on Film Noir, Realist Cinema, and Classical Film Theory at both undergraduate and MA levels. He supervises PhD students researching topics ranging from horror aesthetics to Chinese Neo-Noir and environmental documentary.
External roles: Council Member of BAFTSS (2021–2026), Editor of Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies, and Co-Organizer of the 2021 BAFTSS conference on 'Time and the Body in Film.'
