John Ryan

John Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at The Citadel since January 2019, holding Professional Engineer licenses in multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces. His expertise combines 22 years of industry experience in building and foundation design with academic roles. He actively participates in professional organizations like the PCI Prestress Concrete Pile Committee and PCI Pile Manufacturers Committee.

He teaches advanced structural engineering courses including Capstone Design, Design of Steel Structures, and Reinforced Concrete Design. His research focuses on optimizing deep foundation systems, seismic design methodologies, and innovative construction practices. He maintains industry ties through consulting via Ryan Structural Engineers, LLC, and engages in STEM outreach through programs like Project Lead the Way and ACE Mentors.

Ryan holds a Ph.D. (2006), M.S. (1999), and B.S. (1998) in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. His professional registrations include P.E. licenses in eight U.S. states and P.Eng. credentials in four Canadian provinces (with some inactive).
