Matthew J. Gombeda is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), serving as Director of the Concrete Materials and Structures Laboratory within the Armour College of Engineering. His expertise bridges experimental and computational structural engineering, with a focus on concrete materials and precast/prestressed systems. Dr. Gombeda holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Structural Engineering from Lehigh University (2019, 2016), and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Penn State University (2014).
His research emphasizes innovative precast/prestressed components, high-volume fly ash concretes, and blast-resistant design methodologies. Key areas include optimizing early-age concrete strength for precast applications, corrosion-resistant reinforcement frameworks, and sustainable cementitious material blends. He actively contributes to industry standards through technical committees with ACI and PCI, focusing on precast concrete codes and blast-resistance guidelines.
Recent work highlights include developing low-shrinkage UHPC formulations for Illinois infrastructure, frameworks for balancing corrosion resistance and structural ductility, and review analyses of supplementary cementitious materials. His laboratory oversees advanced testing of structural systems under extreme loads, aligning with industry needs for resilient construction solutions.
