Dr. John W. Arthur is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. A Fellow of the Explorers Club, his research focuses on ceramic technology, craft specialization, and social stratification in Africa and North America. He holds an M.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
Arthur has conducted archaeological research in southwestern Ethiopia since 1995, leading to the discovery of a 4,500-year-old burial site. This work resulted in the first sequencing of an ancient African genome, published in Science, and media coverage in the New York Times. His book Living with Pottery examines Gamo ethnoarchaeology and beer production residues in ceramics.
Teaching courses in North American archaeology and anthropological theory, Arthur also leads local excavations at the Weedon Island Site. He serves as President of the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, applying archaeological skills to community engagement.
