Kathryn Weedman Arthur is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of South Florida, where she has established herself as a leading scholar in ethnoarchaeology and cultural anthropology. With over 20 years of dedicated research in southern Ethiopia, she has developed extensive expertise in material culture studies, particularly focusing on stone tool technology and its relationship to social constructs. Her work bridges archaeological methods with contemporary cultural practices to illuminate historical processes and human agency.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Anthropology, University of Florida
- M.A. in Anthropology, University of Texas at Austin
- B.A. in Anthropology, University of Texas at Austin
Professor Arthur's research centers on exploring how knowledge and technology are learned and embedded within specific cultural constructs such as gender, religion, and caste. She specializes in ethnoarchaeological approaches to understanding lithic technology among the Gamo and Boreda peoples of southern Ethiopia, with particular emphasis on revealing the agency of women and historically disenfranchised populations in the archaeological record. Her innovative work challenges traditional assumptions about gender roles in prehistoric tool production and use.
Her scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with community-based approaches to archaeology, particularly in documenting sacred landscapes and ancestral heritage sites in Ethiopia. Arthur's publications demonstrate a progression from technical studies of lithic technology toward more holistic examinations of how material culture intersects with social identity, gender dynamics, and community heritage preservation. Her recent work increasingly incorporates collaborative methodologies that center Indigenous knowledge systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Gordon R. Willey Prize (2012, Archaeology Division American Anthropological Association)
- Exemplary Cross-Fields Prize (2011, General Anthropology Division American Anthropological Association)
- Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research (2012)
- Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Service (2014)
Professor Arthur has secured significant research funding including Fulbright awards, Leakey Foundation grants, National Endowment for the Humanities grants, and multiple National Science Foundation grants. Her collaborative projects often involve interdisciplinary teams working with local communities in Ethiopia to document and preserve cultural heritage. She co-founded the journal Ethnoarchaeology with Liam Frink, establishing an important venue for scholarly exchange in her field.
Her research team, which includes her husband John W. Arthur (also an anthropologist at USF) and colleague Matthew Curtis, has conducted long-term fieldwork in the Gamo Highlands of southern Ethiopia. This collaborative approach has enabled comprehensive documentation of material culture practices, sacred landscapes, and oral histories that might otherwise be lost due to globalization and cultural change.
