John W. Arthur is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. His research focuses on ethnoarchaeology, social stratification, and craft specialization in Ethiopia and historical ecological changes in Florida. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Gamo Highlands of Ethiopia since 2005, supported by multiple NSF and NEH grants. Collaborations with Kathy Arthur and Matthew Curtis include excavations at Weedon Island, Florida, studying Tampa Bay ecological shifts. Arthur’s publications span archaeological methodologies, cultural transitions, and community-based research. He authored Living with Pottery: Ethnoarchaeology among the Gamo of southwest Ethiopia and co-authored studies on Ethiopian geomorphology and hide-working practices. He received the Explorer's Club Fellow award in 2024.
