Anne Underhill is a Professor of Anthropology at Yale University and Curator at the Peabody Museum. Her research focuses on East Asian archaeology, particularly China's late prehistoric and early Bronze Age periods. She has led excavations and surveys in Shandong Province since 1995, with a focus on Liangchengzhen. Her work integrates ethnoarchaeology, ceramic analysis, and cultural heritage protection.
Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia (1990). Prior affiliations include the Field Museum, University of Illinois-Chicago, and Franklin and Marshall College. She has received the National Friendship Award (2008) from the Chinese government.
Research interests include craft production (ceramics), exchange systems, mortuary practices, and the protection of archaeological sites from illegal antiquities trade. She has conducted ethnoarchaeological studies in Guizhou and Xinjiang provinces, documenting traditional pottery techniques.
Recent publications emphasize urbanization processes in late Neolithic China and technological analysis of white ware ceramics. Her collaborative projects bridge Chinese and international archaeological teams, producing both English and Chinese scholarly outputs.
