Dr. Anke Hein is the Peter Moores Associate Professor in Chinese Archaeology at the University of Oxford's School of Archaeology, affiliated with St Hugh's College. Her research focuses on culture contact, identity formation, ceramic technology, and ethnoarchaeology in prehistoric and early-historic East and Central Asia, particularly Western China. She leads major projects such as 'Excavating Andersson' and 'Tracing Elusive Women in Chinese Archaeology,' and co-edits the China Ceramic Petrography Database. She teaches courses like 'From the First Ceramics to the Terracotta Soldiers' and supervises doctoral students in archaeology and archaeological science.
Her work bridges field archaeology, material analysis, and historical research, with emphasis on China's border regions and the Tibetan Plateau. Recent projects include investigations into pottery origins in Northeast China, ethnoarchaeology in the Wei River Valley, and the socio-political dynamics of Han imperial expansion. She is a core member of the Oxford Centre for Asian Archaeology, Art and Culture (OCAAAC), promoting interdisciplinary research and heritage preservation.
Dr. Hein has supervised numerous PhD students exploring topics such as ceramic production networks, cultural interaction, and heritage authenticity. Her research spans prehistoric to early historic periods, integrating geochemical analysis, residue studies, and spatial technologies to understand human-environment relationships and material culture evolution.
